DESCRIPTION:April 18th\, noon. Good Friday\, a brief service of solemn reflection – Why is it called Good Friday? Some sources suggest that the day is “good” in that it is holy\, or that the phrase is a corruption of “God’s Friday”. Perhaps “good” in this context refers to a day or season observed as holy by the church. Either way\, as Christians\, we should certainly set aside time to reflect on what Jesus’ death means to us and to consider what he valued enough to give up his own life.

DESCRIPTION:April 17th\, 7:30 pm. Maundy Thursday Service of Tenebrae – “Tenebrae” is the name given to the celebration\, with special ceremonies for the last three days of Holy Week.  Thirteen candles (representing the twelve disciples and Christ) are lit. The traditions regarding this service go back at least to the ninth century. This year at Avon Congregational Church\, we will listen to scripture readings covering The Last Supper and Passion Narratives of Christ. The Passion story relays Jesus’ agony and arrest in Gethsemane and concludes with his burial. Interspersed between the readings are reflective hymns and anthems. Candles are snuffed as we near the dark moment of Christ’s death.

DESCRIPTION:April 13th\, 10:00 am. Palm Sunday Service\, with Processional of Palms – Palm Sunday falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem\, an event mentioned in each of the four canonical Gospels.  It begins our Holy Week. It is the day that we remember and celebrate the day Jesus entered into Jerusalem\, seen by the oppressed\, as Savior and King. As Jesus rode a donkey into the town of Jerusalem a large crowd gathered and laid palm branches and their cloaks across the road\, giving Jesus royal treatment. The hundreds of people shouted “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
