DESCRIPTION:Palm Sunday Service\, April 2nd\, 10:00 am with Processional of Palms \nPalm Sunday falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem\, an event mentioned in each of the four canonical Gospels.  It begins our Holy Week. It is the day that we remember and celebrate the day Jesus entered into Jerusalem\, seen by the oppressed\, as Savior and King. As Jesus rode a donkey into the town of Jerusalem a large crowd gathered and laid palm branches and their cloaks across the road\, giving Jesus royal treatment. The hundreds of people shouted “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

DESCRIPTION:Maundy Thursday Service of Tenebrae\, April 6th\, 7:30 pm \n“Tenebrae” is the name given to the celebration\, with special ceremonies for the last three days of Holy Week.  Thirteen candles (representing the twelve disciples and Christ) are lit. The traditions regarding this service go back at least to the ninth century. This year at Avon Congregational Church\, we will listen to scripture readings covering The Last Supper and Passion Narratives of Christ. The Passion story relays Jesus’ agony and arrest in Gethsemane and concludes with his burial. Interspersed between the readings are reflective hymns and anthems. Candles are snuffed as we near the dark moment of Christ’s death. This meaningful service is meant to center us for further understanding about the life and commitment of Jesus as he lives and dies in God’s ways.

Based on the book of the same title by Shasta Nelson and presented by The Rev. Jennifer McCleery and The Rev. Marcia Cox. \n  \nWhile we might have a number of friends and/or wish for new ones in the future\, it is good for us to acquire a deeper understanding of the meaning and nature of friendships\, which are grounded in God’s love for us and desire for us to care for one another. But friendships need to be nurtured\, so in this retreat we will articulate the characteristics and nature of the friendships we have and that are possible. This will enable us to become more aware of the varying degrees of expectations from the people we consider friends. as well as the things that they might expect from us.
