Afternoon at the Movies
An Afternoon at the Movies featuring Shadowlands, Sunday, July 27th at 3:00 PM – Leslie Desmangles will present this brilliant film in the church library on the second floor. The movie is based on the life of C. S. Lewis (1898 –1963), a British writer and Christian theologian best known for the series of children’s books, Chronicles of Narnia. Shadowlands recounts the life of the reserved bachelor theologian and Oxford University professor (Anthony Hopkins), and a Jewish American poet Joy Gresham (Debra Winger). In the 1950s, the unmarried Lewis leads a quiet life of intellectual pursuits, untouched by any passion for another person until he meets Gresham. She is an extroverted divorcee from New York visiting England with her son Douglas. She bursts unexpectedly into his life, tearing the veil of his cloistered intellectual world, opening his heart to sentiments that he has written about but has never experienced. Their relationship becomes a romance in which he discovers that love presents some marked contrasts: that the happiness we experience in the company of others can often be accompanied by profound suffering. This film is based on Lewis’s own life story A Grief Observed. Sign up on the main hall bulletin board so we know how many to expect. Questions? Contact Leslie Desmangles at ldesmangles@gmail.com.
