Maundy Thursday
April 17 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
April 17th, 7:30 pm. Maundy Thursday Service of Tenebrae – “Tenebrae” is the name given to the celebration, with special ceremonies for the last three days of Holy Week. Thirteen candles (representing the twelve disciples and Christ) are lit. The traditions regarding this service go back at least to the ninth century. This year at Avon Congregational Church, we will listen to scripture readings covering The Last Supper and Passion Narratives of Christ. The Passion story relays Jesus’ agony and arrest in Gethsemane and concludes with his burial. Interspersed between the readings are reflective hymns and anthems. Candles are snuffed as we near the dark moment of Christ’s death.
